Representation 9614 on Examination Consultation Provision for Gypsies and Travellers by Mr Adam Wood

Support / Object: OBJECT
Document Link: Examination Consultation Provision for Gypsies and Travellers - Main Matter 15 - Whether or not the plan would make appropriate provision for gypsy and traveller accommodation over the plan period having regard to the evidence of need and proposed sites?, Issue - Whether or not the proposed sites identified for gypsy and traveller accommodation would be soundly based in terms of their location and site specific impacts, Site CAL/2301T - The Old Potato Store, Dark Lane, Calow (2 pitches) , Question 15
Representation: Summary by Officer.

Although the site proposed would be an extension to the existing traveller site, there is the residential area in close proximity. An expansion would impinge on the natural beauty of this area, an unfair prospect for current residents.
The uncertainty as to whether suitable access can be made to the site seems highly problematic - the fact that Dark Lane is of a 'narrow and tortuous alignment' and so may impact upon the safety of other highway users is alarming. This would cause concern for current residents in the surrounding area.
The fact that access could impact on hedgerows indicates that there are environmental concerns; in an area where there seems to be increasing private housing development I feel we must protect the vacant land from any further urban sprawl and maintain areas, where possible, for forestry, agriculture as well as areas to provide habitat to wildlife.

I am writing to express my concerns regarding the Examination Consultation Provision for Gypsies and Travellers. After reading through the information given online, firstly, although the site proposed would be an extension to the existing traveller site, there is the residential area in close proximity. With the expansion of the gypsies/travellers site, this would impinge on the natural beauty of this area - an unfair prospect for current residents. Secondly the uncertainty as to whether suitable access can be made to the sight seems highly problematic - the fact that Dark Lane is of a 'narrow and tortuous alignment' and so may impact upon the safety of other highway users is alarming. Again this would seem to be a cause for concern for current residents in the surrounding area in Calow. Thirdly, the fact that the access could impact on hedgerows indicates that there are environmental concerns; in an area where there seems to be increasing private housing development I feel we must protect the vacant land from any further urban sprawl and maintain areas, where possible, for forestry, agriculture as well as areas to provide habitat to wildlife. Ultimately the traveller/gypsy extension should be prevented.

I look forward to hearing back from you.
