Representations on Examination Consultation Provision for Gypsies and Travellers - Question 1

Representation ID: 9706

SUPPORT Derbyshire County Council (Mr Steven Buffery)

Summary by Officer

Derbyshire County Council has engaged with NEDDC and other partners including the Derbyshire Gypsy Liaison Group to prepare the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment (GTAA). The final GTAA was agreed by all Derbyshire partners including NEDDC in 2015.
Since the publication of the GTAA, all the local authorities in Derbyshire together with the emergency services and health organisations have worked together through the Derbyshire Traveller Issues Working Group (TIWG) to monitor the recommendations, implications and requirements of the GTAA.
In the context of the Duty to Cooperate, Derbyshire County Council's officers have engaged in joint working with officers from North East Derbyshire District Council over the last 16 months or so to seek to identify land in the County Council's ownership that might be suitable for use as Gypsy and Traveller sites. No potential sites were assessed by the County Council as suitable for release for Gypsy and Traveller accommodation.

NEDDC have not consulted with the local community regarding the extension of the site and how it could affect the residents quality of life and local area. NEEDC are again late with the GTAA and Local Plan therefore running out of time and have taken the decision to extend existing sites rather than find new sites. Calow has one establish G and T site why should it provide more pitches?

SUPPORT Sheffield City Council (Mrs Laura Stephens)

We can confirm that North East Derbyshire Council approached Sheffield in early 2018 about the possibility of assisting them in meeting some of their need for Gypsy and Traveller pitches, under the duty to cooperate. At that time, we were unable to commit to providing capacity to accommodate extra need from North East Derbyshire. This remains the case.
